Ubuntu External Monitor Problem

Ubuntu 8.04 on a Macbook2,1. Setting the laptop's display to "Off" and external to its highest resolution yields this... Notice the problem goes away when the "Appearance Preferences" window opens...

I hooked up a hp external monitor to my laptop and everythin fine, but fucked up when i went changing settings etc, i did a System Restore and it fixed the prob' however, whenever i play video in WMP only the laptop screen shows the content, while on the ext' monitor, the WMP shows, except the video! HELP!

Dude, atleast your laptop can run it, mine can't... The laptop monitor displays nothing and my external monitor does the sameas yours after you close the wallpaper window.
