The motion: "We should accept performance-enhancing drugs in competitive sports"

Moderator: Bob Costas
Speaking for the motion: Radley Balko, Norman Fost and Julian Savulescu
Speaking against the motion: George Michael, Dale Murphy and Richard Pound

IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.

  • Not that I'm necessarily for steroids or HGH, but everyone on the right side needs to learn what it means to beg a question. The debate is whether steroids should be allowed and all they keep saying is "it's unfair because it's against the rules." We know, that's why were trying to have a debate.

    listen navyseal is correct.

money.. will make training so much easier, rest time, training facilities, foods, supplementation, specific training, special equipment... we havent touched on steroids yet?

i know it doesnt make sense, but its highly strange, but true, steroids actually level the playing field.

  • Cortisones help someone heal faster, why isnt that cheating...

  • "Rules, rules, rules ..." wtf. Seriously? We are arguing about what the rules should BE

  • @Hypatia1951 Medicine isn't medicine: There is one way you have to treat active athletes and another set of rules for everbody else. Does that seem logical to you?

  • This guy is a moron. Why should people heal slower when we can heal them faster? Just cause, is his answer. And what is "a little later." Why does he make the assumption that the time difference is small. It could be a difference of years. The assumption that the time difference is small is completely unmerited.

And how much should we regulate ball players for the sake of giving children a good example. Should they not be allowed to drink? Should we prevent them from having premarital sex?

  • dont bother arguing with navyseal. he is pro steroids and is unable to look at the argument objectively, and from all angles.

Steroids do not create an un-level playing field. Simply because they are available to everyone. If you had access to multimillion dollar training facilities / nutrition / equipment and I did not, is that unfair ?

You mention the kids. If they were properly educated about the usage, then kids would know better than to abuse them at a young age. Keeping the information in the dark and lying about them is not the way to go.

  • Steroids in sports should not be allowed because it unlevels the playing field. Those who choose not to take them should not be almost forced to take them in order to catch up to those who do and subject themselves to possible side effects. Not to mention what message they give off to younger kids who idolize them. As far as outside of sports like alcohol.steroids should be a choice and there should be some sort of responsiblity by those who choose to use.
