Watch hands and faces were painted with radium, to make them glow in the dark, in the early 20th century. Google "radium girls." There is a thread on the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website which addresses this issue -- basically, don't lick or eat the things, and you should be ok. But, if in doubt, don't work with hands and faces from the early 1900s.
