On June 27th, tens of thousands of volunteers from across the country took part in thousands of events designed to raise visibility for health care reform in their communities. These health care service projects gave volunteers a chance to make an impact in their own communities and improve the lives of their neighbors in the short term -- and they are just one step forward in the larger fight for long term, comprehensive health care reform.

No, that's not it at all. Single Payer is the least expensive way. Your taxes might not increase at all, but even if they did, you would save more since there would be no more co-pays and no more medical bankruptcies. You have to really read up on the issue, since your comment demonstrates you don't understand. Single Payer is everyone in and no one left out. it will cost you less and bring the United States up to world standards. Don't you want the U.S. to be on top?

If it is proper that a Central Authority guarantee health care, why not the more immediate essentials for life, food and shelter; why not clothing?

The underlying premise is a form of Communism, where the Government assumes the ultimate role for taking care of everyone. This is the absolute antithesis of the concept of American Freedom. It is part and parcel of a utilitarian life view that underpinned the great Socialized Societies, which we defeated in World War II and in the Cold War.
