This is my homemade brushless motor. Or you could call it a fan! It's made from old junk and surplus components mostly. Better description is in the video!

  • Since this video, the motor has been uppgraded with a total of 2 more coils connected in parallell to the original ones, and spaced about 90 degrees apart. That gave me a bit more speed out of it.

  • @huskyd2000 Thanks! Yes I came up with the idea to use LEDs and photoresistors myself. At first I was trying to to use an IR LED, pulsing at about 40KHz, and reflect that on the blade, wich would trigger a IR reciever. But I never got it to work. Thus, I used this idea. I don't know how fast these kinds of resistors are, but I sort of doubt they could handle very high RPMs. If anyone has done it this way before, well to be honest I don't know.

  • Genius! I would never have thought to use LED's and photoresistors to create a working brushless motor system! I dabble around in DIY audio electronics (mostly guitar effect/distortion stompboxes) but what you've shown here uses most of the same fundamentals that I learned through my hobby. Surprisingly simpler than I expected. Thank you for sharing this. Did you come up with the idea of the "photocommutator" on your own, or is this actually used in certain applications?
