22 March 1978 - Satyam Shivam Sundaram (Truth is Eternal and Beautiful) is an Indian film. Satyam means Truth, Shivam can refer to either Lord Shiva or Eternal and Sundaram means Beautiful. The movie is set in a village where Roopa, played by Zeenat Aman, lives with her father, and the actor, Shashi Kapoor, comes as an engineer to oversee and build a major dam. Roopa is an attractive young lady. She is religious and goes to the village Hindu temple daily and sings hymns and devotional songs.
Since her childhood she loved three things - God, music and dancing. Growing up she was happy until, as a young child, she was burned by a pot of oil on the right cheek of her face. This ruined her facial beauty but she never lost faith.
Roopa keeps the right cheek hidden by covering it with her Sari. She is afraid that he will turn away when he sees her gruesome side of her face.
The hero, on the other hand, suffers from a fear of ugliness (cacophobia), and cringes repulsively when he sees Roopa in the day. However, he meets her at night, and failing to see the disfigured side, falls in love with her and asks her father permission to marry her. However, she is scared of the consequences.
Eventually he marries her only to discover the truth, at which he disowns her and drives her out of the house. The movie then shifts gears towards another message. The hero now cannot fathom an ugly wife in his house so heroine decides to continue playing the role of lover. She meets and lures him with her voice and continues to meet with him in the dark with a veil to hide her charred side of the face. They both eventually make love and as a typical storyline, she becomes pregnant and gets worried. Hero is told of her pregnant wife which he does not believe that it could be his child. This is the pathological face of the hero where the character is shown to carry psychological issues of his own, of not being able to accept the reality. Some time later - for a climax scene - a terrible storm ravages the village, leading to a flood in whose swirling waters he overcomes his fear of ugliness and saves Roopa from drowning.
