Learning to play this and other songs by Steely Dan has really broadened my horizons as a drummer. Although this is not a complicated song, the groove is definitely one worth learning, as the skills I have picked up in the process apply to lots of other music I play.

  • I do something a little different from the basic pattern, which has the hihat being played on the 3rd and 4th 16th-note figures with a hi-hat lift on every other 4th figure (the one that Rick Marotta talks about in his video on this song). I do a little alternating bewtween the hat and the snare leading up to the 3 and 4 so I can get in some ghost notes on the snare. My left knee bounces a bit, but I'm trying to keep the hi-hat lift on the last 16th of the 3rd beat of every measure.

  • Very nice, tight and in the pocket. Love the groove, I've been browsing a lot of V Drum vids today and this is my favorite so far, lots of feel and style. Kudos.

  • @ericgtr Thanks! Maybe I should always wear sandals when I play...

  • Great groove !

  • Thank you! I have found that covering Steely Dan tunes really has made me grow as a drummer. The grooves are not showy, but they are challenging, and I am constantly uncovering nuances to them that I did not hear before.

  • fuckin hate electronic kits. It;s like artificial flowers. Athsetically very nice and practical but no smell or love for the thing!

  • Makes me wonder just how much experience you have with ekits. I wouldn't be surprised if you could not tell the difference between electronic or acoustic in a blind comparison. I know what you are saying, though. There is this layer of technology between you and the sound with an ekit that just isn't there with an acoustic. Still, when it comes to e-drums of no drums, I'm perfectly happy with e-drums!

  • nicely done dude, this is such a tough drum part to lock into - I am practising and your version has helped me captain. much kudos

  • @Stickinthemud57 Jerry Marotta.

  • Is the hats pattern in the verse like a 16th not pedal stick combo on the 3+4 of the measure? It looks like you;re pumping 8ths on the hat foot..

  • gud one dude simple but effective, thats the secret of playin tight. a lot of musos dont get it, that a lot of times playin less is best

  • I am sooo impressed!

  • Great feel, lovely sound. A drummer who hasn't forgotten about the listeners and our poor ears getting slaughtered by the myriad of unmusical youtubing drummers.

  • Great cover! I'm new to Roland and the TD20. Are you using a particular preset kit, or is this one you've created?

  • @FATSLATER1 So you would say that electric guitars are also artificial? Not that I mind a nice acoustic guitar mind you, but think of all that great music the electric has given us.
