As Sen. Barack Obama prepares to visit Iraq to survey the situation on the ground, the McCain campaign is engaging in an internal war—of words, that is.

After months of calling for the Democratic candidate to visit Iraq John McCain now has to deal with the massive amount of attention Obama is receiving by going.

During an appearance on Fox News Thursday morning, McCain's communications director Jill Hazelbaker leveled the harshest attack to date, calling Obama's trip a "campaign rally overseas."

"Let's drop the pretense that this is a fact-finding trip and call it what it is: the first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas," she said. The campaign highlighted that quote in an email blasted to reporters.

But McCain disagreed with his communications director. Asked about Hazelbaker's campaign-rally-overseas comment on his campaign bus Thursday in Kansas City, Mo., McCain said: "The fact is that I'm glad he is going to Iraq. I am glad he is going to Afghanistan. It's long, long overdue if you want to lead this nation."

Obama is receiving much more attention than McCain did on a similar trip this spring. McCain did not take reporters on that trip, rather he spent more than a week as part of a congressional delegation. Obama also plans stops in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of a congressional delegation, but the rest of the trip to the Mideast and Europe is being organized by his campaign. The traveling press corps will include three network news anchors.

Shortly after McCain contradicted Hazelbaker's remarks, several of his most prominent surrogates gathered at a news conference on Capitol Hill to release a "documentary" -- eight minutes of cable news footage showing Obama's varying positions on Iraq.

While they were there, each of the half a dozen speakers took a punch much along Hazelbaker's lines. "This is nothing but a political stunt," said Rep. Eric Cantor from Virginia.

Sen. Richard Burr from North Carolina pointed to the hype around the rally scheduled for Berlin as evidence of Obama's intent. "I think it's safe to say as this trip becomes reality, it's also reality that it's more about politics than it is about fact-finding or about exploring the relationships abroad," Burr said.

When McCain's campaign plane landed in Michigan, the candidate talked to reporters to clarify his original remarks. The Iraq and Afghanistan portion of the trip, he said, was not political but the subsequent swing through Europe was.

"If he has political rallies in other places, obviously then it's a political trip. But I was speaking specifically about Iraq and Afghanistan and I believe that... this will not be a place for political rallies or politicization but the rest of the trip, then we'll see what happens," McCain said.

Asked to clarify whether he believed the European visit was simply a photo opportunity, he said: "Apparently it's going to be. If he's going to have rally in Germany at the Brandenburg Gate, which is what is being publicly stated. Of course, if you have political rallies, then it's a political event."
