Downtown Fort Lauderdale was gutted by white-flight to the suburbs, but now that people are choosing smaller families, and with gas back up to nearly $3 a gallon, many are choosing to avoid the hideous traffic. In the heady days of the real estate boom, Sistrunk was a prime target for expansion of the downtown care, and bulldozers left 50% of the land vacant there. A recent plan to begin anew the re-gentrification of the historically Black Sistrunk District was recently announced.
