Dr. Pakzaban (www.pakzaban.com) demonstrates an endoscopic third ventriculostomy and brain biopsy. In brain endoscopy, an endoscope (fiberoptic camera and light source) is inserted into the brain through a small hole in the skull. The endoscope is navigated to specifics parts of the brain to accomplish specific tasks. In this case, the endoscope is used to make a perforation in the floor of third ventricle (third ventriculo-cisternostomy) to relieve hydrocephalus caused by a brain tumor. A biopsy of the tumor is taken on the way out. Scuba diving enthusiasts will not miss the strong visual parallels between brain endoscopy and a night dive.
