PS/MS 188M PA Co-President Yvonne Walker was one of two PS/MS 188M representatives who made remarks at the Coalition's press briefing today.
In the press release issued by the Coalition on Monday, December 15, 2009, Yvonne Walker also said, "Charter schools have been called the incubators of innovation and have been presented as a means of providing high quality education options in the absence of successful programs - especially for underserved populations. Charter schools are not the only success story in New York City. The four District One public schools in this growing coalition have been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for their own successes and serve disproportionately high percentages of students at risk: Title I, English Language Learners, Special Education, and/or homeless students. Reduced space will jeopardize the very programs contributing to outstanding achievement gains. We believe that NYC needs multiple models of success to provide excellent education for all.
