This is a photo from the video of the derivative Shiatsu class in the Canadian College of Shiatsu Therapy on May 27, 2007. Kiyoshi Ikenaga-sensei, a Registered International Shiatsu Instructor and the founder of the Canadian College of Shiatsu Therapy, showed the students who learned various Shiatsu treatments for five months, Shiatsu treatment for the cervical region for the final lesson. First of all, he explained to the students during the demonstration that the important thing is not to give hard pressure on the cervical region because this area is very sensitive. He also explained to the students that giving too much pressure on the cervical region may cause inflammation the next day. Using palm pressure helps reduce the tension in the cervical region. In Shiatsu foundation class, the students are taught to press three lines on the anterior, lateral and posterior cervical region. However in the derivative class, he demonstrated to the students, that five lines can be pressed, between the anterior and lateral cervical region and also between lateral and posterior cervical region. He also explained that doing Shiatsu treatment on supra, inter, infra scapular to lumbar, are important for relieving the knots in the muscle of the cervical region. After the demonstration, Ikenaga-sensei taught one-on-one to each student the Shiatsu treatment for the neck and provided guidance to the students according to their conditions.

Thank you for uploading this demonstration. I was just wondering what is the therapeutical advantage for positioning the client on the floor, laying sideways. This way, the cervical area being worked is stretched, therefore, the tsubos must be more difficult to treat. Also, the master seems to apply pressure with a broad thumb-pad, which probably makes the contact less specifical. I have studied a modern shiatsu style, I teach and practice at a massage table, quite different from your style.
