Surely no conductor is as misrepresented by his recorded legacy as the great Otto Klemperer, here we get a glimpse of the bold modernist that startled, shocked and amazed the Weimar Republic at the Kroll Opera - the 63 year old Klemperer leaves Toscanini, Kleiber and a good deal of the HIP crowd in the dust with this stunningly fiery live broadcast of Fidelio, we can only hope this gem will be released by another label that doesn't decide to filter out all the noise and half the music.

  • I have the famous Klemperer recording with the Philharmonia Chorus on Emi. Did he record the opera more than one time?

  • No, there's just one studio recording and two broadcasts, a 61 one by the BBC and this one.

  • A great recording.

  • Yes, it's amazing the differences between this performance, the 1960 Covent Garden one, and the (only months later) studio one. The final choruses in the Hungarian performance are almost unsingably fast, totally unlike the classic Philharmonia recording.

  • You mean "Fidelio" not Figaro, right?

  • obviously there was this "evolution" w/ok, but in this case maybe it had as much to do w/ok's take on the "magyar" aesthetic??

  • Wonderfull recording , any chance of putting it on You Tube for us?

  • Beethoven's Fidelio overture in F major... lol
