Commander James W. Kissick, Jr. recalls two Kamikaze attacks witnessed while serving on the USS Yorktown as a Navy Dive Bomber gunner during World War II.
Courtesty of the Central Florida World War 2 Museum Veteran History Project.
The ship he's referring to, that lost 800 men to a kamikaze attack, is the USS Franklin. In March 1945, under the command of Capt. Leslie H. Gehres, the Franklin was attacked. Nearly 800 men died and 500 were wounded. The carrier earned the distinction of being the hardest-hit warship to survive WW2.
