Probably didn't shut it down deliberately. With the engine at idle (the correct position for spinning) the engine will often stop due to the airflow angle. No big deal after the recovery to restart the engine, particularly as it usually starts windmilling in the recovery.
Not very clever to actually shut the engine down for the spin, that would be a manoeuvre for which an F.I. plus student would be chucked out for, if they survive it.
