ENGINEERING A BETTER FUTURE FOR CAMBODIA
By Benjamin Kunde
Richard Chipman, Dale Findlay, Quentin Large, and Thomas O'Donovan are four engineers working out of the University of Queensland in conjunction with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and Resource Development International -- Cambodia (RDIC).
They are currently designing a simple washing machine prototype for implementation in Kandal province in Cambodia.
It is their intention that the washing machine will be made from local materials and be able to endure the conditions of the local environment. The design is to be low cost yet efficient and ergonomically viable.
The aim of the washing machine is to; reduce time and effort spent washing, ease water pollution caused from tradition washboard methods along the Mekong River, and improve the quality of life of the Cambodian people.
The team are still in research and experimental phases however once their vision is fully developed, they hope to obtain funding from the EWB and RDIC among other NGOs to implement their project.
