see what he is doing and he'd risk injuring his uke. To your local aikido club and try out a wrist lock (on yourself dealt upon you by an experienced aikidoist)..feel the pain and then say it's dumb, it is far from dumb... it is used by paramilitaries world wide and by the japanese police force. Nothing is fool proof when it comes to martail arts and physical sports, there's always someone better, stronger, bigger or quicker...

In traditional martial arts, the wrist grab is one of the most common attacks. Its aim is to prevent you from unsheathing a weapon.

However there are other arts that you can learn quicker to defend yourself, you just have to ask do you still want to be practising in your 50's like our teacher, maybe kickboxing won't let you but aikido will, if my knees hold up.....

I see a lot of keyboard warriors commenting on here without the slightest knowledge of martial arts or street fighting experience. Yeah this is a boring demo but it is very high level aikido, I've been practising for almost two years and no one in our class in combat proficient yet in aikido, however with over 17 years of Kung fu, karate, kickboxing,Kali, judo and other arts under my belt as well as security experience I can tell you without a doubt aikido will work in the street.
