西安藝俗社 xian yisushe
李淑芳演出 performer: Ms. Li shufang

Qinqiang (秦腔, pinyin: Qínqiāng) or Luantan (亂彈, pinyin: Luàntán) is the representative folk Chinese opera of the northwest Province of Shaanxi, China, where it was called Qin thousands of years ago. Its melodies were originated from the rural areas of ancient Shaanxi and Gansu.

It uses Bangzi as an instrument, as it is called Bangzi opera. Bangzi tune is the oldest, most affluent opera tune in China's Four Great Characteristic Melodies. Qinqiang is the representative of the Bangzi opera and the most important origin of other Bangzi operas.
There are 13 kinds of characters in Qinqiang including four kinds of "Sheng" (生, male)(老生、須生、小生、幼生), six kinds of "Dan" (旦, female)(老旦、正旦、小旦、花旦、武旦、媒旦), two kinds of "Jing" (淨, painted face male)(大淨、毛淨) and one kind of "Chou" (丑, Clown), also knowns as " 13 Tou Wangzi" (十三頭網子).

  • @CelestialKindred Very interesting. And I am glad to see the reference to the venerable Xuan Zang, whose awesome travels have been a subject of admiration for generations of Indians. And apart from the study suggested by you, there is need for greater cultural exchange even in modern Asia too! I have to admit that we have no knowledge or appreciation of the great musical and cultural traditions of other countries in the orient. It is a real pity, because the loss is entirely ours!

  • @Flamennova Actually I once watched a documentary demonstrating music in Southern India and was shocked by the similarity with Qinqiang from my province. On the other hand, the famous Buddist monk Xuan Zang wrote in his memoir that some Indian raj said he heard about a popular music set in China when they met. So maybe some one can really study the culture interchange in ancient Asia.

  • Beautiful song...with a little change in pitch it will be a hit in Hindi! Thanks for sharing.

  • 聆听古典戏曲犹如品尝千年佳酿,沁脾醉心!
