Rejoice greatly (Version 1)

This is the original 12/8 version of the soprano aria from Part 1 of Messiah and was the first version of this aria to be composed. In this uncut rendition from the original autograph score, the aria is one of only two true and complete da capo arias in the entire oratorio. Thanks to doctorfate77 for reminding me that "He was Despised" is also a da capo aria. Handel originally composed "Rejoice greatly" in the "pastoral" tempo of 12/8 in order to be consistent with the story of the shepherds and angels which immediately precedes it in the oratorio.

No offense intended, but "He was despised" is a true da capo aria. The returned A section of "Rejoice" contains modified material.

I stand corrected--"He was Despised" is a true da capo aria. How could I have forgotten that? However--the original version of "Rejoice Greatly" sung here has an unmodified repeat of section A which also makes it a true da capo aria. I will shortly post Version 2 of this aria which does contain modified material in the return to section A. Thanks for listening and commenting!
