@t5239857289578947594 SRB's are Thrusters, one of the O rings on the left SRB failed and the thrust flame leaked out the Oring. The leakage flame reached the External(Orange) Hydrogen Tank. The Hydrogen tank withstood the flame for a certain period, then failed and broke through igniting the hydrogen inside the tank.

As for the "explosion" i quote from wiki
-When the external tank disintegrated, the fuel and oxidizer stored within it were released, producing the appearance of a massive fireball.However, according to the NASA there was only "localized combustion" of propellant.the visible cloud was primarily composed of vapor and gases resulting from the release of the shuttle's liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant

@sparrowlt The external tank did explode.Look up hydogen,Oh and it was the SRB not the thruster.

Challenger didnt exploded.. it desintigrated when one thruster leak made the whole craft spin and aerodinamic forces riped her apart .. actually the front half of Challenger survived intact with the cockpit and crew and just fall down to the sea.
the "explosion" is the liquid hydrogen of the ripping main fuel tank turning into vapor..
