I replaced all the capacitors in the Philco and added a fuse holder.
First I demonstrate it with an external tuner as I needed to re-connect a wire to get the oscillator stage working again.
This brought back AM reception, however some repairman in the past removed the AM-FM 3rd IF can and replaced it with an AM only one! This set has both the AM and FM if coils in the same cans.
Therefore the FM can not work on this unless I can find a replacement Philco IF can or chassis somewhere.
I don't know if I can sub in a more modern FM IF can as this has a 9.1 mhz IF frequency for FM and later sets used 10.7 mhz IF.

  • Yep very rare. Hope you find an IF, it would be so neat to get the FM working. And of course it's not the ordinary FM IF, it's the discriminator.

  • I think this may actually use a ratio detector as opposed to a discriminator as it has the electrolytic capacitor in the circuit and does not have an additional limiter stage (it only has a total of 2 IF stages). I have a junk Curtis Mathes AM/FM tube type radio chassis in the barn so I may try salvaging the ratio detector transformer from it and just see if it can be re-tuned to the IF frequency in the Philco.

  • Evening I just picked up a Philco model 47-1227..I am also having trouble with the fm..my unit has never been touched other than replaceing a tube or 2..anyway .cool clip thanks

  • I just bought a Philco 46-1209 which has the same cabinet as yours. Thanks for posting this as, even though my radio kind of works, I will be restoring it soon. The problem is mine is missing the correct phonograph. Let me know if you find a spare or a parts machine. Marc.

  • I have several parts chassis with the 9.1 MC IF transformers but they are from 1949 and 1950 and the transformers are smaller.

I try to find the oldest FM radios also.

  • i picked this model at an auction for 5.00. the case looks great, but the components dont work. :(

  • I have an Immaculate 47-1227--the guy from the Philco website fixed the unit--I was excited that I was able to replace all the tubes. I have not replaced the needle on the player, but other than that it is great listening at christmas time and steeler games! The Furniture is showroom quality!

  • plenty of bass! BOOM BOOM thump BOOOM BOOM thats awesome for such a radio!

  • interesting to hear rap on am

definably a strange radio for many reasons

  • Hope you get that one working.Looks great &

sounds great so far, how do you decide which

ones to use and which to display?Haha

  • Try calling triode electronics in Chicago (where I live) at 773-Has-Tube to see if they have an IF can (don't count on it though). I go there and the store is overfilled with old junk. I was there with a friend looking through some old service booklets that contain schematics and info for antique TV's, phonographs, radios, etc for a Stewart Warner model 9100B schematic.

  • would the 3ed one be the same as the other two can they be copied and hand wound
