Wimberly has impressed me again, making use of the Gimbal technology to create such a "beauty "(This head). Refer here for what does Gimbal means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimbal

Making use of Earths Gravity and equilabrium for a super fast head for large telephoto lens. It makes telephoto lens shooting effortless. A 3-10kg (Can be less or more) lens mounted on the head becomes fluent and efficient.
In this video, I mounted the lens i use for wildlife on the Wimberly Head Mark II.
I even put it on the ground without any tripod attached and spun the head. Even when spinning, it finds its balance, not even toppling over with such weight on a small area. The bearing is even better. Look how much longer it spins after i have stopped pushing it.

Lens is Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG with a 2X TC .
Nikon D300
Speedlight SB800

  • That's awesome. It just goes to show how much faith you've got in the product.

I can see a drinking game in this: Spin the Telephoto!

  • I think you can do it a lot cheaper with a lazy Susan.

  • You have pointed both the strength and the weakness of this design. It is so frictionless that a touch (such as touching the locking knob) will send it wildly spinning. If not locked, a breath of wind will turn it. It desperately needs a friction adjustment or, better yet, some fluid damping.

  • @canturgan Sure you can, but you'll soon find out why Susan is lazy.

  • You spin me right round baby right round

like a record baby right round round round

  • Fascinating! Like it's floating on a bed of magnetism!

  • @jlgoins64 - you can order the Wimberley Gimbal head from most online photographer gear retailers. B&H is one of them. If you already have a high quality Arca-Swiss style ballhead then you should consider the Wimberley sidekick which turns your ballhead into a quality gimbal head but it's half the price ($250 vs. $600). I use the sidekick with a "really right stuff" BH-55 ballhead and it performs just as well as the full Wimberley up to Canon's 500mm.

  • does anyone have a website to go to to order this??

  • Yeah , I just bought one of these heads it cost £500 here in the UK but if you have a lens 400mm or upwards it is worth every penny. I was really worried that the expense wouldn't be worth it but after using it once it was all wow.

  • Now that's sweet!

  • That's impressive.
