And the trial against Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir continues in Jakarta. Bashir, who is the spiritual leader of the outlawed Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiah, is on trial over terror charges.

Today some of his followers were in court to testify that he had raised funds for a paramilitary camp.

Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was back in court in Jakarta on Thursday. He's facing charges of funding a paramilitary training camp in Indonesia that was set to be used to plot a war against non-Muslims.

Also in court... many of Bashir's followers. Six of them came in person to testify.

Bashir was attending the court without his lawyers. They are absent as a protest over the court's acceptance of previous testimony by video link.

Medical doctor Syarif Usman says he had donated around $1,000 to the camp, which is located in Aceh Province.

[Dr. Syarif Usman, Witness]:
"They showed me a video half an hour or one-hour long, it showed greenery or forests and I remember there was a group of men conducting military training there."

Another witness, Joko Sulistiyono, who was a trainer at the camp, denied in court that it was a terrorist training ground.

[Joko Sulistiyono, Witness]:
"This training camp is in accordance with shariah, so we can be prepared whenever it is needed. And I believe Islam regards this training camp as a big achievement."

In earlier sessions, Bashir denied all the accusations, but defended the training camp in Aceh as a part of physical preparation for jihad - or holy war.

Bashir could face the death penalty, however analysts say it's unlikely if he's convicted.

Two previous attempts to convict Bashir on terror charges failed because his followers recanted their testimonies in court. But security analysts say this time prosecutors have enough evidence to jail the preacher.

Police say Islamist militant groups in Indonesia are waging war against Western symbols like embassies and Western-brand hotels, as well as government officials, foreign firms and NGOs.
