How could I NOT share this gem with you?

Well, I must admit that first I had to get used to their unique sound, but now I'm hooked! Listening to this music is one pure, harmonic, haunting experience. Please just listen and maybe you'll like it too! It will be 3:25 well wasted!

Clarence Clay and William Scott (both born in the 1920's) had been singing and playing on the streets of Philadelphia for thirteen years by the time they were noticed by Pete Welding.

Clay & Scott were blind black street singers who sang gospels accompanied only by one accordion (played by Clarence Clay). American researcher Welding produced a complete album featuring these two preaching musicians, which was recorded in 1961 in Philadelphia, PA, and two years later they recorded another studio album, released on Bluesville (nr. 1066), called "The New Gospel Keys", produced by Kenneth S. Goldstein & Pete Welding.

After that final recording session Clarence Clay and William Scott disappeared and -as far as I know- nobody heared of them since...

  • Great recording! I love the "crustiness" of these singers and their recordings. No additives, just soul.

  • Thanks for sharing, Teade, this is a wonderful old gospel with a beautiful story behind it. Thank you very much indeed, this was nice!
