United Nations, Geneva, 19 May 2009 - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon goes to Sri Lanka on Friday, 22 May, for an on-the spot assessment of the situation following the reported end of hostilities between government forces and Tamil separatists in the north of the island. He told a news conference in Geneva that he was relieved by the conclusion of the military operation, but was deeply troubled by the loss of so many civilian lives.
