To prepare Raleigh for his first experiences with a rider, I'm trying an experiment where I train him using only pressure-free, attraction-based techniques. How do you get a horse to stand still while he's at liberty? First I ask him to touch the block with his hoof. I might first tap the block with my foot and say Touch. When he touches it, I mark the moment and give him a reward. Then I'll start asking for both feet. This would be enough to get a horse to target a block and stand in one place. But Raleigh really seems to enjoy putting all four on at one time. Lots more about targeting and attraction at: http://paintinghorse.wordpress.com/
