@Flakmaid In 2007, members of the 2006 OSUMB and even a few A-band members volunteered to march the first game. The Alumni Band did Script Ohio with the Volunteer Band. The 2007 OSUMB didn't march until the 2nd game.
@Johnson1581@Flackmaid They changed it going into the 2006 football season, officially it was due to the week 2 game where the band was travelling to Texas. This way the band would have a week and a half instead of 2 days to learn a "Real" halftime show, gather their blazer uniform for travel, etc. After the '06 season they kept the new system never went back to the Volunteer Band....
@ikarooz I don't think has happened in the last few years after I left the band in 2000, but LUVIHIM is correct. It used to be that the first game of the year, there was a 'Volunteer Band.' This game was prior to tryouts. The band from the last year would 'volunteer' to play at that game. The week that follows was tryout week with the second game being Alumni week.
It used to be this way. School / Game scheduling has changed to where the band you see for the first game is that years 'new' band.
killilea11 that is false the new band is selected the wednesday before the alumni game and the next 2 days are rigorous to prepare for the opening game
The old band is the Alumni Band. They were at the field before the OSUMB. The first game of the season, about 600 past members of the band practice that morning and perform at pregame and halftime with the Ohio State Marching Band. Sometimes the OSUMB is made up of last year's members plus some Athletic Band members. This year, tryouts are before the first game.
