And so we begin our journey into the Columbia album set - #C-44 - entitled "Boogie Woogie" with side 1, "Boo-Woo" by Harry James and the Boogie Woogie Trio.

Just a bit quick, but the message still gets through well enough. ;)

The personnel for this February 1, 1939 session are:

Harry James - trumpet
Pete Johnson - piano
Johnny Williams - bass
Eddie Dougherty - drums

  • so how did columbia pick up on the brunswick label & reissue it as their own? So, the set I have was issued when? I believe Columbia started the 'red label' in 1939. That doesn't necessarily mean that my Columbia Boogie Woogie 4 record set came out that year...just saying. Do you know when it was issued?

    thanks

  • @ross2343 I believe this set was issued in 1940 - Brunswick and its catalog was owned by Columbia from 1932-1940 (only the Brunswick recordings from 1932-1940 were Columbia's property - the ownership changes of Brunswick from the 1920's-1940's were complicated, to say the least ;) ).

  • I have this same set...is it really 1939 production? I can't find the date anywhere on the box, sleeves, or records.

  • @ross2343 Yep - it was originally released on the Brunswick label in 1939. :)

  • thanks for the info...I'd like to sell my set to a serious collector....unfortunately, eBay has watered down many items..including 78's to less than $10 for this set.

  • Great !!!!!!!!!

  • Mark

Great stuff I love Harry James and his trumpet - cool playing.

    Thanks Richard

  • Love Harry. Nice cut. Thanks, man!!!!!!!!

  • Harrys big band may have had records that were commercial but his trio sure could swing!

  • Fabulous music!
