  • I have been doing lots of experiments and I have not detected that the sand has done anything to screw up the magnetic field.

    Furthermore, the magnets are solid-state so the only place the sand ends up is stuck to either pole. 90% of it pulls off with my fingers, the rest takes time and effort, but it can be "wiped" clean with a clean finger after coaxing the sand to a single pole by running the magnet stack along the dirty ones individually. Wrap them in a sandwich bag if excessively anal.

  • You can get that sand in El Salvador, Central America :p I lived there maybe I should get some sand now that I have a big neodymium magnet
