sheet metal forming

It's possible to do this with a flat backing. Look up "sheet metal shrinking disk". You can go both ways. If the spinning round disk pushes down enough, it expands the metal. If it just spins and heats the metal, it can be used to shrink. I've seen this done with a disk in an angle grinder - I guess it was only a matter of time for it to come to CNC. Very cool.

sheet metal spinning in reverse.. WOW.. Surely there is a pattern under that sheet.. descending over top of it. OR? a anvil that moves with the ball.. the rotating ball generates heat helping to stretch and form the metal. I have seen pressure-welding machines do the same thing, generate so much heat, it bonds the metal. A smart guy came up with this. I am a robotics geek, love this concept.

ouch, just stamp it in 1 second from a sheet that is all.

how does it works? is something like a fast prototipe or what, I have never seen one work like that.

wow

@Basterd240sx I was wondering about that. I see the form now that you mention it. The sheet metal holder slides down on those four poles as the sheet is formed over the mold.

that is cool

All that work to make a hard hat?
I hope this was just to show how the machine works, and not how hard hats are made. LOL

That's really cool I was like what is that ohhhhh a hardhat coooool not something you'd find in shop (Aka ashtray class). I still wish my school had had a shop class I've always loved working with my hands and it would have been cool to work with metal but I'll be content with clay sculpture.

If you look closely youll see theres a form under the sheet (first few seconds of video) and then youll notice the sheet is clamped into a framework thats on slides so that it can drop as needed. This whole process was done by stretching the metal. A ball end tool wont shrink metal when used like this

Edit: I recently read the definiton "Kinematic Incremental Sheet Forming":
KISF
Maybe you can use that as a reference. For a complete overview, you might consider Emmens et al. (DOI: 10.1016/j.jmatprotec.2010.02.0
14 ). Here, you'll finde a complete overview about the current Patents as well, which might be interesting for any industrial fellows around. -
