In 1982 I was commissioned to create a work for the Arts In Motion festival at Laguna Beach, in collaboration with kinetic sculptor Elfi Chester. Her physicist husband Marvin Chester, a professor at UCLA, had heard about a monofilament object with a single axis, on which spikes are mounted horizontally. At the bottom of each small one was a weight. When given a slight push the object spins, becoming a helix shape and demonstrating angular momentum. This item is known as a gimbdu and they were used as prayer objects in Europe and the Middle East that carried messages upwards to the heavens as they rotated.

"Gimbdu Dance Suite was created by Louise Reichlin & Dancers/Los Angeles Choreographers & Dancers. The first scheduled performance was rained out and the piece was instead performed at The House in Santa Monica, and later at Piece College, and at health expos. One was called FutureWorld. It is for 5 dancers and kinetic sculpture by Elfi Chester. Music is for ney flute and synthesizer by Richard Horowitz.
Dancers: Louise Reichlin, Lisa Moses, Youngae Park, Robin Speer, Ron Sheppard

  • So nice to hear from you. We were going to try to redo the piece several years and, and I contacted Marvin who was going to help a sculpture person up north do the giant Gimbdu. But we never finished the project. The music is an early piece by Richard Horowitz. I heard it on KCRW with an interview and called the music director who then was Tom Schnabel. He introduced us and Richard gave me a tape of possible unrecorded music to use, but I used the original ones from that early recording.
