FORT WORTH, TX, March 11, 2011—A good way to gauge an individual's impact is to look at the people that he inspired. In the case of Dr. Wayne A. Hey, doctor of osteopathic medicine, urologic surgeon and president of DFW Urology Consultants, one needs to look no further than his children. "I remember growing up rounding with him through the hospitals, riding on his shoulders," recalls Wayne David Hey, his eldest son and namesake. "[Seeing] the love and joy he brought out from all of his patients and the people around him...really pushed me towards a career in medicine."
A sixth-year urology resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the younger Hey is determined to follow in his father's footsteps. He could not have chosen a better role model. Over the course of a 36-year career, Hey Sr. built an unassailable reputation as an urologist and educator. In 1981, he established DFW Urology Consultants, where he continues to perform urological surgery and treat patients for a host of urinary problems and diseases. As his son would attest, one of Dr. Hey's strongest assets is his compassionate attitude towards patients. "I earn my patients' trust by letting them know that I'm going to take whatever time is necessary to help them," he states. "If it's a quick fix, we're pretty efficient; if it takes time, we're willing to do that."
Dr. Hey is gratified to be able to pass on his knowledge and philosophy to his son Wayne, who is set to join the practice when he completes his residency. In addition to his eldest, his son Joshua is in medical school and his daughter Bethany has also decided on a career in health care as a physician assistant. "DFW Urology's future looks very bright," he beams. "I feel like [I've] more or less [run] the race and I'm getting to reach back and hand the baton."

Dr. Hey has earned not only the trust of his patients and the confidence of his students — he has also won the respect of his peers. A Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, he maintains affiliation in other eminent organizations such as the Dallas chapter of the American Urological Association, the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Osteopathic Association. Honors of which he is a recipient include selection as a "Top Urologist in America" in 2008 and 2007 by the Consumers' Research Council of America, as a "Super Doctor" in the State of Texas in 2006, and as a "Top Doctor" in Fort Worth in 2005 and 2002. He was named a Texas Physician of the Year in 2004, a Businessman of the Year in 2003, and Physician of the Year in 2003 and Republican of the Year in 2001 by the National Republican Congressional Committee. In addition, Dr. Hey was recognized with the Specialist of the Year award in 1982 by the Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas, with the Clinical Professor of the Year award in 1981 by the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and as Resident of the Year in Urologic Surgery in 1978 by Flint Osteopathic Hospital.

Looking past the citations that have been heaped upon him, Dr. Hey derives the deepest satisfaction simply from seeing a patient regain his health. He is excited by the prospect of doing this for more years to come and to sharing the experience with his children. "My youngest daughter Bethany wants to go to PA school and it's very likely that we'll see her come along as a physician assistant, maybe even as a doctor herself...Our youngest son Joshua is just graduating from medical school and there's no telling what he will do in terms of his involvement with us," Dr. Hey says. "We'll continue to move forward and be innovative. [We] will bring new technologies, new skills and new blood into DFW Urology Consultants to make it an ongoing service provider for our community."
