On June 13, 2007, Mayor R.T. Rybak spoke at a meeting of the Central Corridor Management Committee. Although the Mayor was responding to Gov. Pawlenty's veto during the 2007 legislative session, his comments are perhaps even more relevant today.
A fast, safe, convenient, and economical rail service to and from the 2 downtowns, the University and the State Capitol area is needed. The proposed concrete project on University Avenue and insane river crossing over the worn-out, corroded, fracture-critical Washington Avenue Bridge, is not what needs to happen. Limiting the entire Central Corridor public transit ridership to only 40,000 daily passengers and forcing them all onto a train in the middle of the street is not a good idea.
I'm no fan of Pawlenty, but when Mpls let the gopher stadium be built right over the proposed light rail line it makes you wonder if Rybak is just playing politics.
