I made this video to show how live subtitles on Young Apprentice Final ruined the programme for deaf people. You'll see a big delay between things being said and appearing on screen in the subtitles. My wife and I are partially deaf, along with one in six people in the UK. It's a shame that deaf people were let down by the final episode of the show.

  • What really bugs me is the poor standard of subtitling on news and current affairs programmes. Newscasters invariably use an autocue. Why can't someone come up with technology so the same text for the autocue also feeds into the subtitling, rather than have a hearing person listen, then type (or mis-type) what they think they've heard for us to read 7 seconds later? Simples! I have cable TV via Virgin Media and it appears worse than when I had the old Freeview box and a dodgy coathanger aerial.

  • I've not been following this program but, I watch all my t.v shows online as virgin media's subtitles are generally usless. This show is availible on the bbc iplayer with different subtitles, not the live delayed ones. I lip read most of my shows and being videos on iplayer you can pause and rewind them so you don't miss anything.

  • Happens all the time - yes hard to follow unless you are a good lip reader!!

  • Interesting. Yes, you could have done better! Look at my homepage. I am from Germany, and also subjects me busy over subtitles. In England, you have almost 100% subtitling on several programs, in Germany we have a total of only 15% of subtitles. One big difference. Many greetings from Germany! RoboDeaf

  • Has anyone complained to the BBC?

  • My mum has hearing problems and she would find this impossible. Every time I see bbc live subtitles, I wonder how anyone can follow their programmes. Considering this is a pre-recorded and edited show, I don't know why they can't put subtitles in during the editing process.

  • Why cannot live stuff run say 5 sec behind - allowing the subtitlers to write out what they need to type, so in theory then the subtitles should be in time.......

  • Hate BBC!!!!!

  • BBC ARE TERRIBLE!!!!!!!

  • I've been watching this programming since first episode, tonight this live subtitles ruined my night! STOP LIVE SUBTITLES ON UNLIVE PROGRAMMING! :(
