This is my final project for MUS-Z361

Description:

My final project was largely motivated by another course that I am
currently enrolled in entitled "Music in Religious Thought and
Experience." In this class we covered both tantric Buddhist music in
Indonesia, specifically gamelan ensambles, as well as religious
manifestations in poplar music. I chose to try to combine these two
concepts, drawing my inspiration from South and East Asian music
(specifically gamelan, and traditions that utilize drone and
overtones), as well as a mix of popular music genres such as dub,
dance, electronica, hip-hop/trip-hop, soundtrack composition, video
game composition, and dub-step. I also tried to reflect myself and my
other various musical interests in this composition by augmenting the
Asian and Western musical elements with West African rhythmic and melodic motifs.

I completed the majority of my work in Digital Performer. All of the
music, with exception of the Hip Hop Kit, was played by me in real
time on the Triton Keyboard. The drum track was created using the
"drum" tab on Digital Performer My instrumentation was as follows:
Hip Hop Kit
Bali Gamelan (x3)
Detuned Saw
Ravelian Pad
Glass Bell Bright (x3)
Dark Jazz Organ
Vibraphone
Reason--Combinator--Thor Polysonic Synthesizer with Init Patch (x2) I created a "wobbly bass" sound by combining two Thor synths through
a Combinator. I set the first Thor to include 2 analog oscillators
(with different wave shapes) and 1 multi oscillator, which I then
detuned. I then increased the Amp Envelope's sustain to maximum,
adjusted the Low Pass Ladder Filter's FREQ knob to half and the RES
knob to 1/4. I then added LFO1 to the source column at the bottom of
the Thor, while changing the AMOUNT to 100 and the DEST to
"Filt1Freq." I prepared the second of the two Thor's similarly. However I set the
analog oscillators to the sign wave and set them to an octave apart (4
and 5 respectively). I then set the multi oscillator to the middle
wave patter, the rounded saw wave. I detuned this oscillator as well.
Under the Low Pass Ladder Filter I adjusted the FREQ knob to 1/4 and
left the RES knob at 0. I then put Reason into "slave mode" in order to play my new synth
effect in Digital Performer.

In Digital Performer I experimented with the levels and panners to
achieve a mix that I was happy with and that enhanced the swirling
aspect of the music. I also played around with the Triton knobs, set
to the A line of controls, in order to create effects that referenced
both dub/electronic music/ and traditional uses of drone and overtone.

I hope that you enjoy my composition!.
