People with Asperger's Syndrome often have a multitude of sensory issues, which can be overwhelming. Effective management of these issues can prevent meltdowns.
I'm very sensitive to many things, examples: Me: *sniff* *sniff*...do you smell that? Friend: No. Me: *sniff* you sure? Friend: Yes. Me: You absolutely sure? Friend: YES, FOR THE LAST TIME, YES GOD DAMN IT! Me: *covers ears* Friend: Why are you covering your ears? *turns on bright laptop screen* Me: *covers eyes* Friend: ...dude, dude, are you ok? *rubs rough sweater on face* Me: *covers face* Yep...I do have asperger's.
I'm hard of hearing, so the noise hardly bothers me, in fact, I tend to bask in loud noises. But, I can't stand a shower with hard water pressure, so mine is usually on the lowest possible, and I couldn't wear jeans until I was 12. I can't touch wet food, like bread that fell in water, or eggs, or really any food that has been sitting in water. I despise foods like cartelidge and stringy foods like celery. I tend to peel the veins on celery :)
I'm oversensitive to noises and of course I always have to ignore them,I can't tell people not to be loud all the time..but it's very hard for example when I have to concentrate on something (e.g. study) and in another room tv is on, I hear it as if it were in my room.
I am having a difficult time trying to help my husband understand my sensory issues. We are going to his parents' house for the Super Bowl and he told me not to say anything about loud noises. He doesn't understand that I can't help it. I can't turn off my ears to those noises.
My main sensory issue is bright light. Many times just being outside makes me have to squint a lot. Before I thought it was due to my poor eyesight, but now I'm thinking Aspergers plays a role in that too.
With sounds I'm pretty good, although a sudden loud blast of audio will still make me jump most of the time. And I absolutely HATE the sound of metal scraping against metal.
Sudden motions can also make me paranoid or jumpy at times.
I'm 48 and still try to get over those things...
My sense of smell has gone away and I rarely can smell anymore.
Most of the time I can deal with an ant crawling on me and calmly remove it..
Sensitive to noise has gotten worse.. what is up with car horns, every time someone walks away the horn blows $%$#@.
And motorcycles - why do people change the mufflers? $($&%$#
: ) I still spend LOTS of time living in my own world... At least I still have that!

Speaking of food, I hate mushy and soggy textures (grosses me out).
I only like crunchy and thick, rubbery, chewy things. And I hate caraway seeds (disgusting aftertaste).
