Master fly tyer, Bill Black shows us how to tie a Blue Wing Olive.

No one really knows the originator, but the Blue Wing Olive is one of the all time best flies in history. A great pattern for imitating many common species of mayflies, particulary the Baetis, which occur in nearly every region of the Northern Hemisphere. This pattern was undoubtably first tied as a wet fly with quill wings. Hackle tip wings have proven to be much more effective on this popular dry fly.

Products used:
Spirit River Fly Tying Kit - Blue WIng Olive
Hook - Spirit Hook #D100
Tail - Long Grey Saddle Fibers
Body - Spirit River Fine & Dry Dubbing FDI-038
Wing - Dun Grey Hackkle Tips
Hackle - 1-2 Dun Grey Hackle

All Products shown are available at finer retailers nationwide.

  • Thanks, I was looking for a classic pattern video, and this was the best I've seen. Lots of BWO variations to learn, but this covers the standard. Real clear, straightforward approach. I appreciate it!

  • I thought the video was both informative and filmed in good quality. I could easily see what you were doing. Instructions were clear, although you may want to tie in the more difficult parts (hackle and wings) slower for beginners. Overall, good video!

  • Hey...give me a comment on this vedio. Positive ...constructive comments are welcome. I need to better learn how to make these the best ever.

I truly hope my skills at fly tying are transfered to you.

    Enjoy.
