J enjoying a good swing on the hammock on the beach of the Nan Shan Cultural Tourism Zone, Hai Nan Island, China.

This kind of hammock is not the type that I have fond memories of in Viet Nam. The Vietnamese hammock is just one sheet of canvas with strings at the ends for attaching to tree trunks or house poles. Though used mostly in the country side, I do recall it being used in my apartment in Saigon when we had visitors. The Vietnamese hammock is setup such that there's almost no way for its occupant to fall off. You lie into it and it sags down. both down to the ground and into itself. It should be possible for someone to sew you inside the hammock as a prank, that's how deep you sink into the hammock. The strings holding up the hammock are no special strings. Once in a while its fraying, after much friction with the pole or tree, would reach a breaking point and the occupant would experience a rude awakening, literally.
