Adriana Pérez and Gerardo Hernandez have not seen each other for almost 12 years. They have been married since 1988. During all these years Adriana has attempted over and over again to get authorization by the U.S. Government to visit her husband serving two life sentences plus 15 years in California. She has submitted multiple requests for visas -10 in total- and all these applications have been denied for a wide range of shifting rationals that hold no real justification whatsoever. The one time she was granted a visa, in July 2002, upon her arrival at Houston airport, Adriana was detained, photographed, finger printed, interrogated for 11 hours, prevented from speaking to a lawyer or Cuban diplomats and subsequently sent back to Cuba preventing her from seeing her husband. We have to ask ourselveswhy so much cruelty? Why is the US government continuing to violate such a basic human right? What is the US government afraid of?
