  • so, he wasn't a "Slave." He WAS a hired hand - in the form of an indentured servant. Now, for all practical purposes - that was similar to slavery, but still not slavery. Also, this song is not a "Cover with a few new words added" it's an original song. You may have been confused as there are several songs written about the music man, Old Joe Clark.
