A good walk or short bus ride from the Colosseum is the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the oldest and ranks first among the four Papal Basilicas or major basilicas of Rome. It holds a special title of ecumenical mother church, or mother church of the whole inhabited world.
There is an enormous pipe organ inside and behind the building is a unique octagonal Lateran Baptistery, perhaps on an earlier structure, where legend has it that Constantine I was baptized (not true, but a must see!).
