The field emission displays The field emission displays (Field Emission Displays, FED) being a matrix of microminiature electronic-radial tubes have the thickness of the panel, not exceeding several millimeters. The flat monitor may be considered as the hybrid of the electronic-radial tube and the liquid-crystal display with the matrix addressing. The brightness, contrast, angle of vision, quick action and quality of the colors in the field emission displays may be compared and even exceeds the same qualities of the electronic-radial tubes, whereas the power consumed, weight and dimension characteristics by far exceed that of the liquid-crystal screens. The service period of the field emission displays may be much longer than that of the liquid-crystal panels. Inside the liquid-crystal panel the lighting elements are present, with a limited service period, besides the reliability percent eliminates the feeding block of the lamps. At the same time the FED-displays are not prone to the above disadvantage, as they produce light independently. The service period of the FED depends on the service period of the luminophor, which is practically unlimited. The field emission display is more reliable due to the simplicity of construction, besides the FED-display technology is based on using several hundred or thousand elementary lighting cells within each data point (pixel) of the screen, the gigantic reserve increasing the reliability by many times. The liquid-crystal panels still have the problem of the "dead" pixels, as the even one semi-conductive matrix transistor going out of order leads to the disconnection of the data point, the number of such transistors per pixel being several units. All the diversity of the devices and equipment, fit for applying the field emission display, may be conventionally divided into four categories: -The household appliances; -The technical equipment; -The special equipment (large-size information panels, extraminiature displays, devices for the reproduction of images with a high density of data, space equipment); -The military equipment (radiolocation systems, aviation displays in the helmet version, devices of nocturnal vision, electronic rear sights). In this connection the implementation of the FED display will help solve quite a number of problems in reflecting data.
