They created the treaty, because if Ireland was granted full independence the rest of the empire would follow, and Britain was only going to remain a global superpower with an Empire. It was a compromise. Speaking as an Irishman, I think that the Free-State was the best that Ireland was going to get at the time. And a republic could be built on it's foundations.

The chap at 6:24 looked the spitting image of Michael Collins, just for a few seconds.

@50TNCSA Nowhere near as long or as bloody, but still vicious.Especially since it degenerated into a geurilla war by 1922.

@ThoughtTraveler he didnt kill collins !!!!

@Topnotch121 Here look u can't blame De Valera for this, He knew him self when sending Michael Collins they would not achieve the full republic. It would be a step towards freedom
-
@Topnotch121 fuck off will ya de valera had no choice and the movie is half wrong anyway
-
de Valeras in some circles is a Communist and a Traitor. He killed Michael Collins. In some circles of thought he is a pimple on the ass of Michael Collins,
Face it there is no movie called De Valeras at all but there is a movie called Michael Collins.
Like De Valeras said himself that he would be a historical footnote while Michael Collins would be studied and revered throughout history

@theozzman91 eamon de valera fucked up here. im a pro treaty collins fan, but he did great things for this country after such as leading us through ww2 and going to crazy lengths to secure our neutrality. he fucked up wit the treaty but when we look back he is still one of the greatest political figures in the history of the state
Question to Topnotch121: I'm a Northerner and was just wondering what the opinion is in the South over de Valera. I understand Collins to be popular for the (in my opinion) sensible decision to sign the Treaty. But what about de Valera? What his legacy? Is he still popular? I know he played a vital role in creating the republic but historians are becoming increasingly critical. Writers like Mansergh, Jackson and Lyons have all spoken out agaisnt him. What's your evaluation of him?
