Gradius 3 arcade stage 3 beaten with no deaths.

Starting weapons: 1 powerup (for speedup).

At the first set of platforms (~0:50), if you kill the turret on the lower ledge at the back, the background music changes.

These platforms were my #1 cause of deaths. I couldn't find any better, more reliable way to enter the middle section than what I did in this video: flying down, killing the two bouncy guys with my laser, and squeezing past two bullets from the turrets below.

From there, things didn't go as planned: I forgot to kill the generator at the bottom and I also chickened-out of killing a bouncy guy. The easiest method I found is to kill those guys, then get under the last platform and fire spread bombs.

The 2nd wallcano always pauses at the same time, letting you pass it safely.

For the second section, the background is incorrect due to emulation errors.

I don't know the best routes through the maze: I just improvised it. For the mud I took a very safe route.

Played on MAME32 v0.95
2006 August 28

Played from a state saved at the start of stage 3.
# of attempts: many

No other emulator assistance (and no auto-fire) was used.

  • SNES arcade version or this? Which is harder?

  • I'm not sure. I've never really played the SNES version on Arcade mode.

In addition, I'm pretty sure there are two versions of the SNES game. On my original SNES cartridge, Arcade mode looked like the Arcade demo (hold A throughout the title screen and intro sequence until the demo starts), where killing enemies would produce a lot of suicide bullets. However, when I emulated the ROM, enemies didn't fire suicide bullets in Arcade mode. o_O

  • that game's absoloute bullshit... Nice video!

  • Yeah it is bullshit ;). I'm not even sure I'll ever be able to get through some of the later levels without saving in the middle :P.

  • Thank you for the comments and information! :)

If MAME32 v0.95 save-states still work in later versions, then I probably should switch to them.

I haven't really started trying to capture loop 2 stage 3 yet. But I imagine it will take quite a while...

  • awsome video, Always wanted to play the arcade version. But i must say, I like the voice of the snes beter:) (you know: speed up, option, etc)

This sounds a bit ... uhm... dull

  • This version does look a little harder though... ;)

  • @NotRegret MY DICK!

  • Watching you play is inspiring; Even though I reasonably know that there's no way I'll get this far in the arcade version.

despite having a slower main cpu and much less ROM space than this arcade board, the SNES has a ridiculously powerful sound engine for its day. But it has limitations too. If you listen to the arcade, the drum sample is much longer noise and a bit cleaner, and the SNES is a very short drum hit with fewer tom-tom tones.

  • interesting subtle differences between this one and the SNES version. The SNES version's music is a big improvement though.

  • @1dosucol1 Now just by moving your ship left or right a bit in that area you will be immune to everything,as the slowdown will kick in and you will be able to easily dodge the bazillion bullets, and the ones from the ceiling guns will just skim over the top of your cockpit ,just as long as you are in the specific area and at that correct height.

Took me ages to perfect that on the ps2 version on difficulty 3/4 without a shield and no power ups .Feels good when you get it down.

  • AT 4:15 ,stay at the top of the screen, but just a little way down, after you destroy the generators and the next gun/bullet shooting things come on screen ,just position yourself so they fire horizontally at you but have your ship a pixel below their bullet.

It will pass just over your cockpit and go through your tail, but you will be able to hit them, now just move back ,so you are under your score or the 1P ,now you can stay in that area and those bouncy things will just go over you

  • Don't forget that the hi-speed level right after you destroy Big Core MkIII counts as a level!
