its funny they advertise the belmon in this clip, by saying the kentucky derby and prekness winner is running the race, since we know how many times the triple crown has happened since 87

The reason the motor broke is because he was running it in 6th gear and nursing it. At low revs a vibration caused a part of the engine to fail - they tested it on the dyno after the race, and the same thing happened. If he had kept it in 5th and gone flat out it would have likely held together.

This was the most disappointing Indy for me, as a fan of Mario. I heard that later they put an engine on the dyno, ran it at the same pace at it blew up at almost the same time.

The power of a turbocharged engine of equal size to the naturally-aspirated one would've been just too much for Mario to hold the lead over Guerrero or Unser, even with the Guerrero pit problem, given the nature of the specs for such machines.

Looking back, Mario really should of turned down the turbo boost and nursed it home. Hell, he had a full lap over Guerrero and Unser Sr., never was any need to run it hard.
