this is a mokai. it is a plastic kayak with a 6 hp honda , air-cooled jet inboard. the pump is custom made by the seller and the motor is a basic lawnmower engine (honda gc190 type qhaf). top speed w/ me is about 15mph. the boat never really planes. it just kinda squats, but goes. have not tried it in shallow-surfing flats to see if it will get ground effects in shallow water and lay the front down. i may modify the hull and add some kind of fiberglass wings aft to continue the basic undersurface of the boat in hope of acheiving a true plane. this boat is what it is and has some great applications for small water. best of all, it cannot overheat. the blades in the turbine, however, are very small (each one is about the size of a postage stamp and as thin as a steak knife) and could easily be damaged if siliceous sand were to go through them. hopefully mokai will stand by them and repair or replace if nec. as i plan to use this unique little craft along time. i was able to load it by myself on top of my honda accord without too much trouble- i just could not do it in a hurry, though. it worked better on towels directly on the roof as opposed to placing on a kayak rack. the motor comes out very easily in seconds, flat. same with the jet drive. overall, a very safe and thought-out craft that you can paddle or motor. only problem i have had was a governor arm breaking it has been dma near impossible to find it. if i get one, i will cast it in kevlar (and make a few, while i'm at it) to avoid this problem. when it does break, the throttle runs WIDE OPEN. have tried it in small creeks- it is the ultimate assault weapon for going places you can't get a boat to or hike to. this boat is amazing- it jumps logs completely out of water, surfs over 4" deep flats and climbs rapids like a 4x4. it does not suck up stuff off the bottom and the jetdrive is easy to clean.
yea, they are- you just can't put dive tanks and weights in 'em + honda is a lot better motor. don't know how the surfango does in a creek with rocks- a big rock hit in a plactic mokai is just a bump. a big rock hit on fiberglass is a fracture with a major repair or possibly a junking.
