This is B.B.'s /first/ training session for Connect Four. He's been practicing this trick for all of five minutes when this video was taken.

  • could parakeets do this?

  • @FireburningTV They certainly could, but this particular prop is a bit large for a cockatiel (notice how B.B. has to stand on a book), let alone a budgie. They have a tiny 'Connect 3' toy I've seen for sale at the Dollar Tree that would work perfectly for budgies. If you can't find it, and you live in the Bay Area, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue has some they sell at some of their events. Leave me a message, and I can make sure they have one at the event for you.

  • I have a question, my cockatiel has VERY similiar patterns on her head and face to yours. But I think shes a girl because the patterns dont wrab all the way around her head like many males ive seen. But im still very confused on her sex. any suggestions?

  • @161202scar I have /never/ seen a male cockatiel where the yellow wraps around to the back of their head - that's just not how it works! If your cockatiel is all grey with a yellow face and a white 'wing stripe' like Bumble B - and especially if he sings - then he's pretty much guaranteed to be a boy.

  • where did you learn how to train him? my cockatiel only knows how to turn in circkels but he is very tame and smart, he also know a few songs, so it should be no problem to teach him something more but i don't know how to, i had him since he was 5 weeks old, he is almost 2 now.

  • @lizzyke87 I learned to train using positive reinforcement - specifically clicker training. There's a yahoogroup called 'bird-click' which has very useful files. There are also a number of books on the market to teach you about clicker training, most notably Karen Pryor's books. Goodluck, and be patient! The first few tricks are the hardest to teach, and then your bird catches on. B.B.'s great at any trick that has to do with putting small objects in or on larger ones, now. ;)

  • Lol A cockatiel named Tuna!

  • I would like to recommend that you consider adopting a bird from a rescue group, or taking on a bird through Craigslist. There is an overabundance of homeless cockatiels looking for families - I have four foster birds of my own looking for a permanent family! You have a better idea of what you're getting into with an adult bird, since a baby will typically grow up to have a different personality. I also recommend getting two cockatiels. They are so much happier in pairs and they do stay tame!
