Thomas Cole (American, 1801-1848). A Pic-Nic Party (formerly The Pic-Nic), 1846. Oil on canvas, 47 7/8 x 54 in. (121.6 x 137.2 cm). Brooklyn Museum, A. Augustus Healy Fund B, 67.205.2.
Poussin definitely portrayed narratives within idealized landscapes two centuries before Cole did, as did Cole's major influence, Turner. So I don't know what this person is talking about. Cole's great, and his influence on American art shouldn't be underestimated. But the setting of a narrative in an epic landscape is definitely not his invention.
