Pole and line fish can be slow and probably could not keep up to the world demand for tuna. its also an expensive exercise, but along with Hand Lining it is the most environmental way to fish for tuna. owners building P&L vessels should be given all the tax breaks and incentive they need- where as other types of tuna catching vessels should be highly taxed and made to pay extremely high annual license fees to discourage their construction - but that's all wishful thinking it will never happen.

Hits on free schools are also a lot less than hits on FADS. The ratio of success on average for free school fishing is around 50-60% compared to FADS where it success is around 95%. This is the reason FAD's are preferred to fish on rather than free schools. Filling the boat up in 15-17 days fishing on FADS makes business sense compared to 30-35 days fishing on school fish.

It is well known Philippine purse seiners created the Payao (FAD) and that their entire fleet of thousands of small coastal and hundreds of large purse-seiners fish fish on FADS. The truth is that fishing on free schools is an art and many Philippine captains would not have any idea on how to fish on Free Schools.

@BrowseMyChannel Let's make sure that does not happen!

@shri03992 - and the more people that recognise this and reflect it in their buying then the sooner the whole market will move to pole-line - supermarkets will soon get the message if the non-pole line tins are left on the shelf. Just spending 5 seconds making the right choice in the supermarket can exert real pressure to change this industry - check the tin and ensure you pick the pole-line caught fish.

@u4987 I totally agree with you! pole-line catching is the only option and I'm always glad to pay more for these fish
When Mankind has poisoned the last River and chopped down the last Tree he will learn that money can not be eaten.

There's just a simple solution: Don't eat any fish!
They feel pain and fear as we do.
