Nice video. I saw a similar technique used at a winter festival in Bavaria. There they split three to four foot logs in the same way and used them as long burning fires for warmth and atmosphere.

Makes me miss Arizona in a way, you can start a fire with a fat girl in corduroys there, here in the NW you need napalm and diligence to start one...nice videos!

thanks for reminding me about this old technique.

Excellent video. Beats weaving a bunch of green willows to make a grate for your campfire and weighs less than a portable with lantern fuel.

I tried this last weekend. I used a pine log about 18 inches long and about 6 inches in diameter. It was a pain to get it to split wide enough for air flow without splitting the log completely apart. But once I got the fire going it really worked well. All I did was boil about 4 cups of water just to see if I could.
Two thumbs up for an excellent survival tip!

thanks for watching, and if it splits all the way it is ok if you have a way to hold the bottom together like in sandy or loose soil

Thanks for the idea. I've never seen that before and I will definitely have to give it a shot the next time I'm on an excursion.
